Peptide reconstitution: bacteriostatic water and accessories

Research peptides are supplied as a lyophilized (freeze-dried) powder because in this form they are stable even when shipped without refrigeration. Before use in the laboratory they have to be dissolved – a step called reconstitution.

The most common solvent is bacteriostatic water 3 ml: sterile water with 0.9% benzyl alcohol, which prevents bacterial growth. That means you can draw from one vial of solution repeatedly, which is not possible with plain sterile water. An unopened vial of bacteriostatic water lasts up to two years; the limit of around 28 days applies only to the solution once the peptide has been dissolved. Our bacteriostatic water has a published certificate of analysis and a safety data sheet.

How to dissolve a peptide correctly?

  • Let both the peptide vial and the water warm to room temperature.
  • Add the water slowly down the side of the vial, not directly onto the powder.
  • Do not shake the vial; just swirl it gently until the powder dissolves.
  • Store the solution in the fridge (2–8 °C) and protect it from light.

Our peptide calculator works out the concentration of the resulting solution. Why peptides do not need to travel cold is explained in the article on shipping peptides without refrigeration.

Why are peptides supplied as a powder?

In solution, peptides gradually degrade – water breaks their bonds and promotes other chemical changes. Lyophilization removes the water from the peptide and immobilises its molecules, so the powder withstands shipping and long storage. The solution is prepared in the laboratory just before use. A dissolved peptide cannot be turned back into powder, so it is sensible to dissolve only as much as you will use within a few weeks.

How much bacteriostatic water do I need?

One 3 ml vial of bacteriostatic water is usually enough to reconstitute one vial of peptide. When dissolving several peptides, it is sensible to have a separate vial for each so that the solutions do not contaminate each other.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between bacteriostatic and sterile water?

Bacteriostatic water contains 0.9% benzyl alcohol, which prevents bacterial growth, so the vial can be used repeatedly. Sterile water is intended for single use.

How long does bacteriostatic water last?

An unopened vial lasts up to two years. The limit of around 28 days applies to the solution once the peptide has been dissolved.

How much water should I add to a peptide?

It depends on the desired concentration. 3.0 ml is the most common choice; the peptide calculator does the exact conversion.

Can I use other water instead of bacteriostatic water?

Sterile water can be used for single-use reconstitution. Neither ordinary nor distilled water is sterile.

Does bacteriostatic water have a certificate of analysis?

Yes. The Janoshik laboratory measured 8.19 mg of benzyl alcohol per millilitre; the certificate is published on the test results page.
